Critics gave The Odyssey 95%. The crowd says 69%. The whole gap is one complaint.
Critics adore The Odyssey. As of July 21 it sat at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, the kind of number that gets carved into a poster.
We measure something different. Skip The Critics tracks what people say about a film in public social media conversations, the unprompted kind. Nobody filling in a review form, nobody clicking stars, just people walking out of a theater and talking. For The Odyssey, that meant 3,652 reactions in the first week, collected daily, classified, and scored.
The crowd's verdict: 69% positive, 21% mixed, 10% negative.
That is a genuinely liked movie. It is also a 26 point gap from the critics, on the same yardstick. Both numbers measure the share of positive verdicts, so this is apples to apples. And when you dig into the reactions, the gap is not really a disagreement about quality. It is one complaint, repeated thousands of different ways.
What people praised
The visuals scored 87 out of 100 across 741 mentions, the highest mark of any aspect. The storms, the sea, the monster sequences. Even reactions that disliked the film tended to concede it looks incredible. Acting lands right behind at 85, with Anne Hathaway's Penelope earning slightly warmer word of mouth than the lead.
The complaint
Pacing scored 44 out of 100, the only aspect in the red, and the specifics barely vary from post to post: the middle stretch of the journey drags. Story, the single most discussed aspect of the film at 990 mentions, lands at a lukewarm 68 for mostly the same reason. Critics saw a deliberate slow burn. A fifth of the crowd saw a gorgeous film that tested their patience.
It is Nolan's conversation, nobody else's
Here is the thing that surprised us most. The conversation is not really about the cast. Christopher Nolan was named around 1,800 times in the reactions we tracked, four times more than Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus. Damon splits the crowd exactly down the middle, 50% of his mentions positive. The supporting names, Holland, Pattinson, Zendaya, barely register by comparison and skew negative when they do. People did not walk out talking about performances. They walked out talking about what Nolan made.
The verdict locked in on day one
On release day, from roughly 500 reactions, the score was 81. A week and 3,652 reactions later: 79. It never left that band. The crowd did not need reviews, discourse cycles, or a second weekend to make up its mind. It knew immediately.
That stability is the point of measuring this way. Star ratings drift with brigades and bots. Review scores arrive before anyone has bought a ticket. Unsolicited conversation, weighted so that sarcasm counts less and "I watched it last night" counts more than "I heard it was bad," settles fast and stays put.
