28 Years Later 3 stalled, needs cash and busy writer Garland

The next installment in the 28 Days Later saga has hit a major roadblock, according to the man who started it all. Per /Film, director Danny Boyle says a third "28 Years Later" film still needs to secure financing.

Boyle also stated that screenwriter Alex Garland would need to participate, but Garland is currently tied up with a massive project of his own. Boyle noted at the London Film Festival that "Alex has been off doing his own film, which is a huge project."

Garland is writing and directing the A24 adaptation of the video game "Elden Ring," which is slated for a March 2028 release. As the writer for every film in the franchise except "28 Weeks Later," his involvement is seen as crucial.

Meanwhile, the fate of franchise star Cillian Murphy is also up in the air. Deadline claims the actor is "in talks" to return, but as /Film notes, those talks are hardly conclusive. Murphy last appeared in a brief cameo in the 2026 film "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple."
