Ace Attorney Fans Are Losing It Over a VR Remaster of a 13-Year-Old Game
Capcom has announced a new Ace Attorney project, but it's not the sequel fans have been waiting for since 2016. Instead, the next release is Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Dual Destinies VR, a virtual reality version of the 2013 Nintendo 3DS game.
Per IGN, the title was announced as part of Meta Connect 2026 and will be exclusive to the Meta Horizon Store for Meta's VR headsets in 2027. The news has sparked a wave of disbelief and frustration among the franchise's dedicated fanbase.
The reaction has been swift and salty. On the Ace Attorney subreddit, fans expressed their dismay, with one quoted by IGN as saying, "This has to be a sick joke." Another lamented, "Bro it's actually over no joke, dead franchise." A third offered, "Do I laugh or cry. because we GOT SOMETHING. But it's VR. With META."
According to the official announcement covered by both outlets, the game has been "rebuilt for VR." Players will be able to yell "OBJECTION!" using voice recognition and use hand tracking to present evidence and call out witnesses. The experience promises to let players "walk through" 3D crime scenes and examine evidence from every angle.
Nintendo Life notes the project is being handled by Amata Games under license from Capcom. The announcement coincides with the series' upcoming 25th anniversary in October 2026, for which a new illustration has been released. Despite the milestone, the VR remaster of a 13-year-old game has been received as a disappointing surprise for fans hoping for a brand-new entry.
