Adam Wingard talks kink, ICE, and slaving away on Godzilla for his new film Onslaught

Adam Wingard talks kink, ICE, and slaving away on Godzilla for his new film Onslaught

Director Adam Wingard is getting spicy about his new A24 action movie 'Onslaught,' which hits theaters this Friday. In a new interview with Variety, Wingard opened up about the film's unexpected elements and the real-world inspirations behind its villains.

He directly addressed adding a 'kink' element to the 80s-inspired thriller, which follows a combat veteran, played by Adria Arjona, who must rescue her daughter when their trailer park is attacked. Wingard didn't shy away from the stylistic choice.

The director also revealed why the film's trio of government-enhanced super soldiers look a certain way. He told Variety the bad guys were designed to resemble ICE agents, drawing a direct line to contemporary immigration enforcement imagery.

Wingard also reflected on his past blockbuster work, contrasting it with this lean, mean throwback. He described spending 'a decade slaving away in the studio system' making the recent 'Godzilla' film, framing 'Onslaught' as a departure from that massive machine.
