'Altered Carbon' creator to adapt 'Samurai Spirits' video game for film
Laeta Kalogridis, the creator of Netflix's 'Altered Carbon', is writing a film adaptation of the SNK video game 'Samurai Spirits', The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reveals.
Kalogridis will develop the movie for The Arena, a new production company launched by Erik Feig. The outlet reports that The Arena is financially backed by SNK, the original game's publisher.
'Samurai Spirits' is a one-on-one fighting game first released in arcades in 1993, set in feudal Japan and known for characters wielding weapons like swords.
This project is part of a larger push by The Arena to adapt SNK's library. The company already has a 'Fatal Fury' movie in the works with writer David S. Goyer and a villain-focused prequel titled 'Geese' with filmmaker Grant Singer. An animated 'Fatal Fury' series is also in development with Skybound, per THR.
