Amanita Design announces surprise sequel Machinarium 2 after 17 years

Fans of a cult classic indie adventure are in for a shock. Per Kotaku, Czech studio Amanita Design has announced Machinarium 2, a follow-up to the beloved 2009 point-and-click game.

The studio made the announcement on social media, posting a short video that showcases its signature hand-drawn cartoon art style. A Steam page for the game is now live.

The sequel will pick up where the original left off, with robot protagonists Josef and Berta escaping Machinarium only to crash-land in a region called the Barrens. There, they'll discover a lush hidden valley inhabited by two strange robot tribes, one living in an elevated monastery and the other in the valley below. Both groups are reportedly running low on power.

Gameplay will let players control both Josef and Berta, switching between them to solve puzzles. As is typical for Amanita's games, the characters will communicate without words, using thought-bubble pictographs instead.

There is no release date yet for Machinarium 2.
