Anne Hathaway joins Tom Cruise for Days of Thunder sequel hitting theaters in 2028
Tom Cruise is getting back behind the wheel. According to exclusive reports from Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, a follow-up to the 1990 film "Days of Thunder" is officially racing toward a June 2, 2028, release from Paramount.
Cruise will reprise his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle. Anne Hathaway has been cast as his co-star, playing a character who owns and runs a racing team, per the trade outlets. The project will be filmed for IMAX and released in premium theater formats.
Cruise shared a promotional image on social media to announce the news, featuring himself and Hathaway posing on a track next to a vibrant green and yellow race car. MovieWeb noted the vehicle's design nods to the original film's color scheme.
Jonathan Levine is attached to direct, Variety confirms. The Hollywood Reporter adds that the script is from Will Staples. Cruise will produce alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper.
The original movie followed Cruise's character as a retired racing veteran, portrayed by Robert Duvall, brings him into a new competitive team.
This new chapter marks a major franchise return for Cruise outside of "Mission: Impossible." Hathaway joins the project amid a busy year that has included several high-profile releases.
