Avengers Endgame Returns to Top of All Time Box Office Chart

Marvel's Avengers Endgame has reclaimed the title of the highest-grossing film ever at the global box office. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a special Encore rerelease of the 2019 movie generated millions in ticket sales last weekend. The added revenue pushed the film's total worldwide haul to $2.9255 billion.
That new total is just enough to pull ahead of James Cameron's Avatar, which had held the record with $2.9237 billion. This marks the second time Endgame has taken the crown from the 2009 sci-fi epic. /Film notes that the two films have now traded the number one spot back and forth twice.
The rerelease campaign was timed to build hype for the upcoming Marvel film Avengers Doomsday, which arrives in theaters this December. Per /Film, the Russo brothers, who directed Endgame, called it required viewing before the new sequel.
For now, the victory belongs to Marvel and the Avengers, but the record could change hands again. Both films are now owned by Disney, ensuring the studio wins regardless of which title sits on top.
