Brad Bird's animated noir Ray Gunn gets a star-studded trailer and release dates
Netflix has dropped the first trailer for Brad Bird's long-awaited animated film "Ray Gunn." The project, reported by Variety, is a sci-fi murder mystery starring Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson.
According to Variety, the neo-noir follows private detective Raymond "Ray" Gunn (Rockwell) and pop star Venus Nova (Johansson), who is caught in a scandal. The trailer shows Gunn navigating a futuristic world filled with humans and aliens, aided by his alien colleague Eyera, voiced by Tom Waits.
Per Collider, the film is set in Metropia, a massive city representing an alternate future as imagined from a 1939 perspective. Bird described the concept to /Film, pitching it as a mashup of a classic detective story with old-school space adventure.
The voice cast is packed. Collider confirms it includes Alan Tudyk, Matt Berry, Bobby Cannavale, Michelle Rodriguez, Patton Oswalt, and John Ratzenberger, among others.
Release plans are set. Collider reports that "Ray Gunn" will open in select theaters, including a limited 70mm run, on December 4, 2026. It will then begin streaming on Netflix on December 18.
