Bungie Lays Out Marathon's Future Roadmap, Promises PvE and New Modes
Bungie has finally detailed its ambitious plans to reshape its struggling extraction shooter, Marathon. Per reports from multiple outlets, the developer outlined a roadmap stretching into 2027, promising significant new content and a fundamental shift away from a purely "cutthroat" experience.
According to ScreenRant, the first major step is a progression refresh and new rewards arriving in October. Then, in December, the game will receive its first permanent PvE experience, a new player shell, and an expanded Perimeter zone, which IGN notes will be closer in scope to a full game area.
The biggest update is slated for March 2027, coinciding with the game's one-year anniversary. ScreenRant reports this "March" update will introduce a "connected" experience blending PvE, PvP, and PvEvP, complete with new enemies, deeper narrative, and a brand-new zone. IGN adds that this update aims to link all the new gameplay modes together.
A major change, per ScreenRant, is Bungie moving away from strict seasonal releases. Updates will now arrive based on what the development team is building, allowing for more "responsible support."
The core philosophy is evolving. As reported by ScreenRant, Bungie stated it wants to support different player desires, from quick solo runs after work to intense crew sessions. To that end, IGN confirms new modes are coming, including a team deathmatch option alongside the new PvE experiences.
Rock Paper Shotgun summarized the shift, noting Bungie said Marathon will be "growing beyond extraction" to create more ways for people to play. The team is reportedly planning content "beyond 2027," signaling a long-term commitment to the game's revival.
