Bungie looks to sublease huge studio space after years of layoffs

Bungie, the PlayStation-owned studio behind Destiny 2, is reportedly looking to sublease large parts of its massive headquarters in Bellevue, Washington, according to a report from The Game Post via Kotaku.

The studio's 210,984-square-foot office, which it more than doubled in size in 2021, now has space it no longer needs. A company spokesperson confirmed the exploration, telling The Game Post the move reflects a shift to a "digital-first model" and the team's "evolving workplace needs." Bungie will still keep a physical office presence in the area.

The facility is described as state-of-the-art, including a motion capture studio, a climbing wall, a dedicated workout space, and specialized audio and editing suites. The 2021 expansion was pitched as a way to support Destiny 2's growth and develop new, unannounced projects.

That optimism has since faded. Since being acquired by Sony for $3.6 billion, Bungie has seen multiple non-Destiny projects canceled and Destiny 2 itself officially sunset. The studio has also conducted several rounds of mass layoffs since 2023, cutting its workforce by over 600 people from a pandemic-era peak of 1,500.

Kotaku notes the expansion is now seen by some as a sign of mismanagement, a major capital investment in physical space for a company that now primarily operates remotely.
