Call of Duty film will focus on the 'cost of war,' not just gunplay, director says

The upcoming Call of Duty movie won't be a simple action spectacle, according to director Peter Berg. In an interview reported by Variety, Berg stated the film will instead delve into the psychological weight of combat.

Berg, who is working from a script by Taylor Sheridan, told ComicBook the project will take its cues from the narrative-driven Modern Warfare series of games. He emphasized that characters like Captain Price and Ghost are complex figures, not superheroes.

"These are not comic books or cartoon characters," Berg said, per the outlet. He explained the film will examine "the cost of war, the cost of having to be a warrior" and the burdens soldiers carry.

The director contrasted it with his more graphically violent Netflix film *The Mosquito Bowl*, suggesting the *Call of Duty* adaptation will prioritize soul over sheer gore. Eurogamer notes he described the goal as showing the "consequence of war."

Paramount Pictures has scheduled the film for release on June 30, 2028. The studio has not yet announced any casting details or a specific plot.
