Call of Duty social team mistakenly posts placeholder image for Modern Warfare 4

Call of Duty social team mistakenly posts placeholder image for Modern Warfare 4

The official Call of Duty social media account slipped up by posting what appeared to be an internal image for the upcoming Modern Warfare 4, and fans are calling it AI slop.

According to IGN, the post featured a render of a soldier that was meant to promote the game's Gamescom presence. Observers quickly noted the soldier's weapon looked strangely distorted, sparking theories it was created by artificial intelligence.

The image was swiftly deleted. A representative for the franchise stated it was an accidental upload of a provisional graphic meant for internal marketing materials, clarifying it was not actual gameplay footage.

This incident has reignited player frustration over Activision's use of generative AI tools. The publisher previously disclosed on Steam that AI is used to create some in-game assets, like calling cards in Black Ops 7.

Fan reactions on social media were sarcastic and skeptical. One joked about the surprise of Activision using 'AI slop,' while another questioned how much AI was involved in the game's overall art development.

The debate is likely to continue as players scrutinize the Modern Warfare 4 beta this weekend and the full release in October for any further signs of AI-generated content.
