Christopher Judge Explains Why He Turned Down Kratos Role in God of War TV Show
Christopher Judge, the voice and motion-capture actor behind Kratos in the recent God of War games, has revealed he passed on playing the character in Amazon's live-action TV adaptation. According to Kotaku, Judge said he declined the role due to the intense physical demands of a live-action production.
Speaking at Fan Expo Canada, Judge explained that at 62 years old, he didn't want to commit to the long days, constant dieting, and rigorous workout schedule required for the part. He initially considered it for his grandson's sake and even began training and reading for the role.
However, he told Collider that the process revealed he was no longer up for the lifestyle. Judge said memorizing lines became unexpectedly difficult, which he took as a sign from his mind and body. He stated he has "no desire to live that way again," referencing his earlier years as a lead on Stargate SG-1.
The role has been a casting saga. Ryan Hurst was originally set to star but departed after an injury. Dave Bautista has since taken over the part. Per the report, Amazon must now reshoot completed episodes with Bautista in the lead.
Judge's decision does not affect his work in video games. Sony Santa Monica has confirmed that while the next game, God of War Laufey, does not star Kratos, another sequel in development will bring the character back, likely with Judge's involvement.
