Clayface scares up $24 million opening as Elizabeth Holmes doc stays hot

DC's latest villain flick, 'Clayface', molded a $24 million domestic debut, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Warner Bros. released the James Watkins-directed body-horror film in over 3,400 theaters. While slightly below initial studio projections, the take is considered solid given the movie's reported $44 million budget. It added another $19 million from international markets.

The opening is seen as a more promising result for DC Studios compared to last summer's 'Supergirl'. The outlet notes the film, starring Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie, is well-positioned for profitability through ancillary sales. It launched more affordably than recent villain spinoffs like 'Venom: The Last Dance' and 'Kraven the Hunter'.

Meanwhile, A24's documentary 'You Can See Everything' saw its ticket sales grow in its second weekend. The film about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes expanded wide and grossed $19.5 million, a 25% increase over its opening frame. Its domestic total now stands at $45.1 million. The Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim-directed project had a secretive production and marketing campaign that appears to be resonating with audiences.

Laika's stop-motion fantasy 'Wildwood' carved out third place with an estimated $11.6 million. The film, directed by Travis Knight and featuring voices from Carey Mulligan and Jacob Tremblay, nearly doubled the opening of the studio's previous film 'Missing Link'. However, it carries a hefty reported budget of $100 million.

Last week's champion, 'Street Fighter', fell roughly 72% to fourth place with $8.6 million. The romantic fantasy 'Wicker' rounded out the top five with a $5.5 million opening.
