Clayface stars promise R-rated body horror will push the DCU to its limits

In the upcoming DC film Clayface, Matt Hagen, played by Tom Rhys Harries, is a rags-to-riches Hollywood star. After a disfiguring attack leaves him abandoned, an experimental treatment sends him spiraling out of control, according to an interview with Collider.

The film also stars Naomi Ackie as Dr. Caitlin Bates and Max Minghella as John Borrelli. In the interview, the actors discussed the film's intense violence and body horror, promising it would push the envelope for the DCU. Harries told Collider he believes the franchise should be taking such risks.

Ackie said nothing in the script felt out of place, adding, 'I was like, "Damn right!" It felt perfect.' The pair also highlighted a romantic storyline that anchors the horror, with Harries describing his character as thinking he's in a romantic comedy before realizing he might be in a psychological horror.

Practical effects will be a major feature. Harries described a difficult scene near the film's end involving a suit called The Maggot, rain, and a lot of goo. He called it a fun day for everyone else on set, but not for himself.

Clayface is scheduled to open in theaters on October 23, 2026.
