Coyote vs Acme team describes its unlikely comeback after studio shelving
The film "Coyote vs Acme" is opening in theaters this Friday, an event that seemed impossible after Warner Bros. Discovery chose not to release the finished movie last year, per TheWrap.
Producer Chris DeFaria told TheWrap the project's journey from cancellation to release reflects "all the new forces that exist in Hollywood right now," including Wall Street influence and the power of social media. The live-action/animation hybrid was ultimately picked up by distributor Ketchup Entertainment.
Development was lengthy. Scott Rudin tried to adapt Ian Frazier's 1990 New Yorker short story in 1998. James Gunn revived it at Warner Bros. in 2015, with Dave Green signing on to direct in 2019. Filming took place in New Mexico in 2022 with a cast including Will Forte, Lana Condor, and John Cena.
In November 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery shelved the completed film for a tax write-off, a move that followed similar cancellations of "Batgirl" and "Scoob! Holiday Haunt." Director Dave Green said he was "beyond devastated" by the decision and immediately thought of the cast and crew's dedication.
Star Will Forte described the emotional journey as starting with "confusion," which turned into "rage for a long time, and then just sorrow." He praised the production as "an awesome experience" with a great group of people.
The film sees Wile E. Coyote hire a lawyer, played by Forte, to sue the Acme corporation over its defective products. The team now hopes audiences will see their work on the big screen.
