Crazy Rich Asians HBO series greenlit with original film stars returning

The long-discussed "Crazy Rich Asians" TV adaptation is officially happening at HBO. Variety and TheWrap report the series has been greenlit as an eight-episode, one-hour drama.

Four stars from the 2018 film are confirmed to return. Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng are set as series regulars, with Michelle Yeoh recurring in her role, according to the outlets. They will reprise the characters they played in the original movie.

The series will continue the story from where the film ended, per TVLine. Adele Lim, who co-wrote the movie, is on board as showrunner and executive producer. The producing team also includes original director Jon M. Chu, author Kevin Kwan, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. HBO and Warner Bros. Television are jointly producing the project.

Lim told Variety the show is "the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes." She added that the writers' room is active and they are excited to share their plans. Author Kevin Kwan said seeing his stories adapted with the "breathing room of an HBO series is a dream come true."

TheWrap notes production is slated to begin in 2027. Casey Bloys of HBO said in a statement that the team is excited to bring the next chapter to life with the returning cast, whom he called "global superstars."
