Dave Bautista officially takes over as Kratos in God of War TV series
Dave Bautista has officially been cast as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video's live-action God of War series, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter confirm. He replaces Ryan Hurst, who was originally cast in the role.
Hurst had to exit the project, per both outlets, after tearing a bicep during a stunt on set earlier this summer. The injury required surgery and would have pushed the production schedule into 2027, prompting the recast.
Bautista, known for roles in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and Dune, is now locked in. According to Variety, his physical preparedness means he can step into the role quickly without extensive training. Filming is expected to resume in Vancouver in the coming weeks, with all of Hurst's scenes requiring reshoots.
The series, which has a two-season order, is based on the two most recent God of War video games. The plot, per loglines from both publications, sees the Spartan warrior and his young son, Atreus, traveling to fulfill a promise to their deceased wife and mother. Callum Vinson remains attached as Atreus.
The supporting cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, among others. Ronald D. Moore is the showrunner.
Production is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Moore's Tall Ship Productions.
