Double Fine revives fan-voted game jam and reclaims its full back catalog
Double Fine is letting fans pick its next project. Per VGC, the studio announced it will launch Amnesia Fortnight 2026 on August 31. The event is a two-week game jam where developers create prototypes, with a documentary and a Kickstarter campaign running alongside.
Backers will vote on which of the studio's ideas become four prototypes, and then select one of those to be made into a full, small-scale game. The event marks the return of the internal jam, which was put on hold after Double Fine was acquired by Xbox in 2019.
In a Kinda Funny Games interview reported by Eurogamer, studio head Tim Schafer confirmed the split from Microsoft has returned the company's intellectual property and publishing rights. "The transfer of the IP came back to us, and we get the publishing rights back to all our games," Schafer said.
He noted the legal processing is still underway for some titles, so they may still bear Microsoft's name for now. Schafer emphasized that purchasing any Double Fine game, like Psychonauts 2 or Kiln, now directly supports the independent studio. "We can turn that money into revenue that helps us extend that runway," he said, referencing the financial cushion provided by Microsoft upon exit.
The studio, alongside Compulsion Games, was spun out into independence as part of Xbox's wider restructuring earlier this year. Nintendo Life reports that Double Fine's Kickstarter will fund the game jam and a new documentary by 2 Player Productions.
