Dungeons & Dragons 2 script is finished as Hasbro hunts for studio
The directors of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves say the script for a sequel is complete, according to a report from JoBlo. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein confirmed the news on The Discourse Podcast, telling host Mike DeAngelo they have officially finished the screenplay.
Per the directors, toy giant Hasbro is now searching for a new studio partner to make the project happen. This follows Paramount-Skydance reportedly passing on the sequel due to budget concerns. Goldstein said Hasbro is a "big believer" in the film and is looking for a studio to make it work.
Daley expressed his eagerness to return to the world and characters from the first movie. He noted a sequel could launch right into the story since introductions are already out of the way. He also blamed the original film's box office on a "perfect storm" of external factors.
Daley pointed to the movie releasing just four days before the record-breaking Super Mario film. He also cited a boycott by some Dungeons & Dragons fans over a license change from Wizards of the Coast a month prior. He felt marketing didn't adequately reach people who weren't already fans of the tabletop game.
While the sequel's fate hangs on a studio deal, Daley and Goldstein have a new film out. Their Cold War action-comedy Mayday debuted on Apple TV+ today.
