Dwarf Fortress to get its first major magic update later this year
The legendary simulation game Dwarf Fortress is finally getting its long-awaited magic systems. According to PC Gamer, developer Tarn Adams confirmed the first Myth and Magic update will arrive before the end of the year.
Adams stated the goal is to create procedural magic anchored in each generated world's unique cosmology. This means every player's universe will have its own fundamental magical rules, generating unique spells, materials, and rituals.
A brief announcement video showed some of the chaotic results. The footage included a goblin magically relocating a feline, a dwarf using force magic to slam an enemy into a wall, and a multi-armed creature unleashing a volley of destructive bolts. Another scene depicted a necromancer raising a dwarf as an undead creature that immediately attacked its former ally.
Adams explained the update will include magical explosions, enchanted materials, rituals, and ancient ruins. He described it as containing everything that defines fantasy, with each element deeply integrated into the universe's own simulated laws.
The update has been in development for roughly a decade, requiring a major scripting overhaul. It does not yet have a specific release date.
