Economists warn of a billion dollar productivity loss for GTA 6 launch

IGN reports that the release of Grand Theft Auto VI next month is causing a stir beyond just the gaming world. Economists have estimated a potential $1 billion loss in productivity as people call out of work to play the game.

Some companies are already planning around the November 19 launch. Burger Motorsports, a car tuning company, announced it will close for the day because so many employees requested it off. The Australian government has even issued public service announcements about workers' rights regarding time off for the game.

The hype is being fueled by an aggressive marketing push from Rockstar Games. The outlet notes ads have popped up in major cities like Miami, New York, and Paris. Rockstar is also spending heavily on music, commissioning an original album from artists like Cardi B and Travis Scott for the game's radio stations.

Other celebrities are getting in on the action. NBA star Steven Adams joked that sports leagues might see a performance dip, and the U.S. Army reportedly offered soldiers a four-day pass for the launch if they reenlist.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC version is rumored for 2027.
