Fable Director Says Game Avoided October 2026 Due to Crowded Slate, Not Fear
Fable director Ralph Fulton has revealed the game was originally targeting an October 2026 launch before its move to February 2027. According to IGN, Fulton insisted the delay was not about being scared of competition, but to avoid a "chaotic window."
Fulton told IGN that October was a packed month, with other major releases like Gears of War E-Day and Phantom Blade Zero. He said he was looking forward to shipping this year but understands the rationale behind the shift. The February 2027 date is now locked in, and Fulton feels "great about it."
Despite a potentially busy February as well, with games like God of War Laufey and Metro 2039 also slated, Fulton pushed back on the idea of being afraid. "We don't run scared of other big games," he said. "We're a big game ourselves." He did admit there was one game he was happy to avoid entirely: Grand Theft Auto VI.
In a separate hands-on preview, IGN detailed Fable's combat, which blends melee, ranged, and magic systems. The demo featured a mission called Mud and Death where players fought waves of reanimated skeletons. Spells shown included lightning strikes, fireballs, levitation, and a spell that could transform enemies.
The combat encourages experimentation, with no rigid class system. Players can combine spells and attacks, like levitating skeletons into the air before hitting them with lightning to shatter their bones. IGN's preview also noted the signature Fable humor was present, including the ability to turn a skeleton into a roast chicken.
