First Game of Thrones Movie Sets 2029 Release, Will Focus on Aegon's Conquest

Westeros is getting its first feature film, and fans have a date to mark. Warner Bros. has officially scheduled "Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest" for release on June 6, 2029, per Variety and other outlets.

The film will be directed by Owen Harris, who has worked on HBO's "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms." The screenplay is by Beau Willimon, known for Netflix's "House of Cards" and Disney+'s "Andor," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The plot reportedly centers on King Aegon I Targaryen's original conquest of Westeros, set centuries before the events of the original TV series. The character of Aegon I has never been portrayed on screen, and no casting has been announced.

Collider notes that Warner Bros. confirmed the project's development earlier this year. With a 2029 release, shooting may not begin until 2028.

The announcement ends years of speculation about a feature film. The Hollywood Reporter mentions that talks for a movie date back over a decade, with series creators once pitching a trilogy to end the flagship show.

In the meantime, HBO's "Game of Thrones" universe continues on television with "House of the Dragon" and "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms."
