Former Bethesda Dev Says Starfield Wasn't Successful Enough for a Sequel
Don't hold your breath for Starfield 2, at least according to a former Bethesda designer.
Kurt Kuhlmann, a former lead systems designer on Starfield, told FRVR he was very surprised if a sequel ever happened. Per IGN, he bluntly said, "I don’t think Starfield was anywhere near successful enough to do a Starfield 2."
He lamented the missed potential, suggesting a follow-up could have been the game director Todd Howard originally envisioned. VGC reports Kuhlmann pointed to specific features, like the planetary outpost construction, which he felt sat isolated from the main story and missions.
He also argued the project's ambition demanded a much larger team than Bethesda had available, stating they needed "way more" people to create the necessary content.
For now, Bethesda's public focus remains on ongoing Starfield updates and the long-awaited The Elder Scrolls VI. Kuhlmann's comments suggest the studio's internal priorities may have already moved on, leaving a direct sequel looking like a cosmic long shot.
