Former Child Stars Demand Industry Reform After Tragic Deaths
Actresses Anna Paquin, Melissa Gilbert, and Christy Carlson Romano are speaking out, calling for Hollywood to better protect young performers following the recent deaths of multiple former child stars. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Hayden Panettiere died last Sunday at age 36, joining Michelle Trachtenberg (39) and Daveigh Chase (35), who passed away earlier this year.
Paquin shared her thoughts on Instagram, writing that it is "not a coincidence" that many former child actors, particularly those "pre-sexualized," face profoundly sad lives and untimely deaths. Per The Hollywood Reporter, she stated existing protective systems "look great on paper" but often fail in practice. She offered support to others in the industry, urging them to reach out.
In a separate post, Paquin argued that it is possible to prioritize the welfare of young performers while telling complex stories, saying it just needs to be a production's top priority.
According to TheWrap, Melissa Gilbert published a Substack essay titled "Enough Is Enough," mourning the three actresses and declaring that "something is very, very wrong." She criticized the industry for exploiting young talent and then discarding them, and questioned where the union's outrage and regulations are. Gilbert wrote that the industry discourages child actors from saying "no," sharing a personal story about working on "Little House on the Prairie" immediately after her father's death because no one wanted her to become too upset to film.
Gilbert, a former SAG president, called for the union to create a substantive support system and for studios to provide accessible mental health care for all young performers. Her advocacy comes amid separate allegations against her husband, actor Timothy Busfield, which were noted by TheWrap.
