Former Xbox Dev Pins Layoffs on Game Pass Flop
A key Forza Horizon developer says Xbox's current chaos stems from Game Pass failing to attract enough subscribers, according to reports from IGN and GameSpot. Mike Brown, former creative director on Forza Horizon 5, called the subscription service a good idea that couldn't pull the numbers Microsoft needed.
Brown stated, "the reality is not enough people have subscribed," per Eurogamer. He suggested the shortfall doomed the massive spending on content the strategy required.
Rock Paper Shotgun reported Brown's comments tie the recent spate of studio closures and layoffs directly to Game Pass's commercial faceplant. The ex-developer traced a line from the service's struggles to the current "pain" at Xbox.
