GDQ axes SNK stream amid Saudi ownership backlash
A celebratory post-event stream for Summer Games Done Quick went up in smoke after swift fan backlash. The stream, sponsored by Metal Slug developer SNK, was axed over the company's ties to Saudi Arabia, per multiple reports.
IGN reports the cancellation was due to 'human rights concerns' regarding SNK's majority ownership by the crown prince of Saudi Arabia. Rock Paper Shotgun notes GDQ apologized for what it called 'an oversight we deeply regret,' admitting a failure to properly vet the partnership.
The controversy comes despite the event raising $2.4 million for charity, as reported by PC Gamer. The speedrunning organization now says it will review its process for evaluating future sponsors.
