Gears of War: E-Day campaign previews find a classic, if familiar, formula
Previews from journalists who played a slice of Gears of War: E-Day suggest The Coalition has stuck close to the classic formula, for better or for worse.
IGN reports the preview covered early parts of Act 2, with Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, now in civilian clothes, forming Bravo Squad with new characters Carter and Reyes. The action takes them through the ash-covered city of Kolona, fighting across the massive Allfather's Legacy Bridge toward Oria Stadium. The outlet noted the return of classic weapons like the Mark-1 Lancer and Gnasher shotgun, alongside a new verticality that allows mantling over cover.
According to IGN, new gameplay elements include unlockable weapon mods, such as an Auto Pouch for the Gnasher that reloads it when stowed, and Tactical Gear buffs like an Adrenaline Injector. VGC's hands-on highlighted updated movement, including a dedicated jump button, sliding, and the ability to lie down behind low cover, calling the combat a more satisfying and less restrictive evolution of the classic 'chunky' feel.
Eurogamer's preview struck a similar chord, calling the experience a direct continuation of the original Xbox 360 trilogy's tone and gameplay. The outlet described a familiar loop of gruff one-liners, roadie-running to cover, and meaty, visceral combat against the Locust Horde, suggesting that fans of the original games will feel right at home.
PC Gamer's brief mention indicated one mission impressed while another did not, noting a return to semi-open-world design. Overall, the consensus from the previews is that E-Day aims to deliver a polished, familiar Gears experience with some modernized mechanics.
