Godzilla Minus Zero becomes first R-rated film in the kaiju franchise
The upcoming sequel Godzilla Minus Zero has officially made franchise history. According to reports from JoBlo and Polygon, the film has received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association.
Per Polygon, the rating was assigned for "some violent content/bloody images." This marks the first time a Godzilla film has ever carried the R rating in the series' long history.
The film is a direct sequel to 2023's Godzilla Minus One, set two years later in 1949. It will follow several surviving characters from the first film as Godzilla returns. The sequel is also expected to reintroduce another classic monster from the franchise.
Director Takashi Yamazaki returns alongside much of the previous film's crew, including cinematographer Kōzō Shibasaki and composer Naoki Satō. Toho is producing the project.
Polygon reports the film will first screen at the New York Film Festival in late September 2026. It is scheduled for a Japanese release on November 3, 2026, followed by a U.S. release via GKIDS on November 6, 2026.
