Godzilla Minus Zero director talks Best Picture hopes after Oscar-qualifying premiere
Director Takashi Yamazaki is trying to keep his expectations low, but he’s allowing himself some Oscar ambition. According to Variety, at the New York Film Festival premiere of his new film "Godzilla Minus Zero," Yamazaki was asked about a potential Best Picture nomination.
He told the outlet he actively tries not to think about awards. He noted his previous film, "Godzilla Minus One," winning Best Visual Effects was a total surprise, and just being nominated already felt like a victory.
Still, Yamazaki admitted that as long as a shot exists, it’s difficult to avoid hoping for it. The director's previous film made history by winning that VFX Oscar in 2024, a first for the Godzilla franchise.
Per Variety, the sequel is already on one awards prognosticator’s shortlist for another Visual Effects nomination next year. The report notes the Academy has recently been more welcoming to major genre films in the top category, though it questions if the new Godzilla installment can break through as a prestige contender.
