GTA 6 interview details stricter world, optional romance, and evolved NPCs

A new, lengthy interview with Rockstar North's Rob Nelson, conducted during a 30-minute GTA 6 gameplay session, has revealed fresh details about the upcoming game. The full conversation, published by IGN, describes a demo where protagonists Jason and Lucia hung out in a Safehouse, which Nelson said functions more like the camps from Red Dead Redemption 2.

Per the interview, the romantic relationship between the two leads, heavily featured in trailers, is entirely optional for players. Nelson explained that Safehouse interactions include basic cosmetic changes, like cutting hair shorter, but new styles require visiting location-specific salons to encourage exploration.

Polygon highlighted several key points from the IGN interview. The game will impose some early restrictions, with certain vehicles locked until players progress further in the story. Cash is more crucial, acting as a gate for story advancement, and players will have a limited carrying capacity for money.

The wanted system gets an update with hollow stars, indicating police are aware of a crime but haven't identified the culprit. According to Polygon's summary, a single full star is easy to lose, making police chases more of a deliberate choice.

GameSpot reported a separate comment from Nelson, stating GTA 6 won't make players "all-powerful" like in past titles. He told IGN that NPCs will have their own impulses and "the world will act upon you as well as you acting upon the world."
