GTA 6's Netflix Debut Spikes Streamer's Traffic and Briefly Crashes It
Netflix got a massive boost from Grand Theft Auto 6's big reveal, but the rush of viewers nearly broke the service. According to IGN, Netflix's US viewership spiked by 50% during the premiere of the GTA 6 Extended Look. However, countless users, including high-profile streamers, reported seeing a "Something Went Wrong" error screen at the exact moment the video was meant to go live, per Eurogamer.
The technical wobble reportedly lasted around 30 seconds before resolving. Sensor Tower data provided to IGN indicates the game has already generated nearly $450 million from over 4.5 million pre-orders, with more than three-quarters of those sales on PlayStation 5. A staggering 90% of pre-orders are for the $100 Ultimate Edition.
Meanwhile, Rockstar has confirmed several major details about the game itself. According to GameSpot, the map for GTA 6 is three times larger than the one in Red Dead Redemption 2. Eurogamer reports that GTA 6 contains over ten times the unique animations found in GTA 5 and double the amount from Red Dead Redemption 2.
Other confirmed features include a relationship system for protagonists Jason and Lucia, a revamped Wanted system replaced by a 'Criminal Profile,' and more challenging driving and car-jacking mechanics. Push Square, citing Kinda Funny Games, reports that Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 will contain no microtransactions and that the developer did not use generative AI in its creation.
Kotaku reports that the game is targeting 30fps on PS5 at launch, with Rockstar reportedly undecided on whether a higher-performance mode will be added later.
