Guillermo del Toro defends Alejandro Iñárritu's Digger on social media

Guillermo del Toro has taken to social media to champion Alejandro G. Iñárritu's new movie Digger. According to Variety, the director called out a review of the Warner Bros. film with a blunt dismissal, labeling its headline "entirely petty."
Del Toro praised the R-rated black comedy, calling it "daring, bold and cinematically complex." He argued the film delivers "in scale, ambition and reach at a theatrical screen level" and is "decidedly a theatrical experience." The director has been actively reposting positive takes on the platform, including one highlighting Tom Cruise's lead performance.
In his posts, del Toro compared the current negative reception of Digger to the initial critical scorn faced by films like The Big Lebowski, The King of Comedy, and The Counselor, which later found audiences. "I remember the review for BIG LEBOWSKI and KING OF COMEDY," he wrote.
Variety notes the film had a rough start at the box office, generating just $3.4 million domestically on its opening Friday amid negative reviews. Estimates suggest a domestic opening weekend of only $7.5 million for the film, which reportedly cost over $125 million to make.
Star Tom Cruise also posted support for Digger on Saturday, writing he was "honored to have had the opportunity to create this film alongside such talented artists."
