Halo fans split on Activision reboot as franchise shifts hands
Activision now officially owns the Halo franchise, and fans are in a civil war over what should happen next. Per IGN, a rumor from a user named TechnicalHalo sparked debate by suggesting Activision will do a total reboot, tossing out all existing lore for a fresh start. The outlet stresses this is just a rumor, but it got the community talking.
One camp wants to keep Master Chief’s core journey intact. Some fans on Reddit, as reported by IGN, suggested a soft reboot that keeps the Bungie-era games canon while retconning everything from Halo 4 onward. "I’m against a full reboot," said one fan, who argued for preserving the Chief stories fans love.
Others see a full reboot as a necessary evil. A key point raised, per IGN, is the age of Steve Downes, the longtime voice of Master Chief. Fans argue recasting him for a sequel feels like "sacrilege," but a reboot would cleanly allow for new actors and a new direction. "A full reboot actually sounds like more of a plan," one fan said.
Eurogamer reports that fans are also worried Activision might "throw away lore that's been built up across 25 years." Social media reactions cited by the outlet show a deep split, with some fearing a reset and others demanding one to axe all storylines from developer 343 Industries. One fan tweeted they'd be "out" if Activision doesn't do a semi-reboot.
The corporate shuffle is dramatic. As Eurogamer notes, Microsoft's restructure laid off 268 roles at Halo Studios and moved the franchise to Activision, which will build a new team for the next game. Activision president Rob Kostich gave a vague statement about making "the greatest Halo game ever," leaving the lore question wide open.
Amid the uncertainty, fans are also questioning the fate of Halo Fest Seattle, a 25th-anniversary event scheduled for December. With most of Halo Studios gutted, per Eurogamer, its status is up in the air.
