HBO Max Orders DC Mockumentary Series The People v. Gorilla Grodd
HBO Max has officially given a series order to "The People v. Gorilla Grodd," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The eight-episode mockumentary comedy will star Skyler Gisondo as Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen, who creates a true-crime series investigating if the supervillain Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted of murder.
Jimmy Tatro will play the titular super-intelligent ape. Gisondo and several co-stars from 2025's "Superman" film are reprising their roles, including Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, and Wendell Pierce. The show is being run by Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, the creators of "American Vandal."
The outlet reports that DC Studios co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran stated that after seeing Gisondo's performance in "Superman," they wanted to explore that world further with Perrault and Yacenda. HBO's head of comedy, Amy Gravitt, said they are excited to present these DC characters in a new way.
A mock press release from the streamer included a quote attributed to Wendell Pierce's Perry White character, questioning the public's perception of Grodd. The showrunners described their goal as creating a series that feels like an in-universe documentary made for the citizens of Metropolis.
The series order follows the recent premiere of the darker DC series "Lanterns." Yacenda will direct all episodes, with Warner Bros. Television producing.
