How 'Abbott Elementary' filmed its chaotic Phillies game episode

Per Variety, filming an episode of 'Abbott Elementary' at a live Philadelphia Phillies game required a mountain of planning and a willingness to improvise. Director Randall Einhorn and the crew shot the season five episode 'Ballgame' over two days at the ballpark, with 400 extras filling the stands on the first day.

The elements proved a challenge. Silk screens for audio and lighting had to be abandoned on the windy game day itself. Einhorn said this actually helped, as the changing light from sun to shade to night visually sold the passage of time better than any scripted clock could.

The mockumentary format's three-camera setup added complexity, with Einhorn noting about 70 scripted pans needed to connect action on the field to the stands to the stadium's PhanaVision jumbotron. The director had to trust his actors and the unpredictable game. When the script called for Phillies star Kyle Schwarber to hit a home run, he instead hit four.

Cameras followed the balls and panned to the scoreboard, capturing genuine reactions from the cast. Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph's character Barbara Howard, a known Schwarber fan, showed real surprise and delight. Schwarber later filmed a scene meeting the characters, admitting he wasn't sure what to do. Einhorn told him to just be himself, and they got the scene in four takes just before the stadium sprinklers turned on.

Einhorn, a veteran of shows like 'The Office', says this episode required the most planning of his career, involving detailed top-down graphics to map character movements and sightlines. Despite the chaos, including a malfunctioning radio that forced him to run around shouting directions, he says he stayed calm. He'd do it again, but would be 'slower to say this is impossible.'
