Iran's 'Midday Meal' wins top Busan prize and a shot at the Oscars

The Iranian drama 'Midday Meal' has won the top prize at the Busan International Film Festival, putting it on a direct path for Oscar consideration next year. The Hollywood Reporter states the festival's jury, led by Zhang Yimou, made the decision unanimously.

Director Majid Majidi dedicated the win to the people of Iran during his acceptance speech. He reportedly condemned the civilian toll of conflict in his country and called for a future of peace.

The film follows a contract teacher in a remote Iranian village whose school is threatened when free lunches for his students disappear. To save the school and his job, he turns to dangerous fuel smuggling. The cast is made up entirely of non-professionals from the region.

Per the report, this Busan victory gives 'Midday Meal' an alternate route to the Oscars' international feature race. Iran has already submitted a different film, but the Busan win qualifies 'Midday Meal' without needing the national committee's selection.

Other winners included Taiwan's Lee Yun Chan for best director, while acting honors went to Zhou Xun and Kashun Himeno. The Indonesian film 'Ibuku' received the special jury prize.
