Jagex Cancels RuneScape Reignited Following Player Backlash

RuneScape's planned fresh-start game mode is dead on arrival. Per IGN, creative director Mod Ryan announced the cancellation of RuneScape Reignited less than two weeks after its reveal at RuneFest 2026. The mode was designed to let new and veteran players begin the MMO from a clean slate.
In a blog post and YouTube video, Ryan stated the decision was a direct response to player feedback, admitting the team "missed the mark." The post cited a desire to avoid repeating past mistakes, referencing a divisive combat update from over a decade ago. Ryan emphasized that growing the game should not come "at the expense of our existing community," IGN reported.
According to PC Gamer, the backlash was swift and fierce. Players complained the mode would fracture the community, require a separate subscription, and divert resources from the main game. Jagex initially promised revisions but ultimately scrapped the project entirely.
Jagex still has plans to attract new players. IGN notes a 10-day free trial for RuneScape Members content will run from December 2-12 for eligible characters. The studio also confirmed its 2027 roadmap remains intact, including the launch of Plugins, an Adventure Guide, and a rework of the Agility skill.
Despite the cancellation, Ryan stated, "the future of RuneScape is still extremely bright." The separate announcement of RuneScape 4, a next-gen version built on Unreal Engine, was also made at RuneFest, though no release date was shared.
