Jake Johnson reveals Hulu pilot with Damon Wayans Jr inspired by The Cable Guy

Jake Johnson spilled details about his latest project with his 'New Girl' co-star Damon Wayans Jr. The pair have shot a pilot for Hulu loosely based on the 1996 Jim Carrey dark comedy 'The Cable Guy,' The Hollywood Reporter reveals.
Per the show's official logline, Johnson plays a lonely cable technician who reconnects with a childhood friend, played by Wayans. What starts as a meaningful friendship for both men quickly spirals into an obsession.
Johnson told THR the idea sparked after a casual conversation. He joked with Wayans about teaming up if his father's show got cancelled. Two days later, Wayans called to say it had been axed, and they told their agents they wanted to work together.
The 'Cable Guy' script came their way, but Johnson says they didn't want a straight remake. They brought on 'New Girl' writer and executive producer Rob Rosell to reshape the concept, using the film only as a starting point.
They pitched the reworked idea to Hulu, which bought it and greenlit a pilot. Johnson calls the result "really fun." At a recent 'New Girl' reunion, co-star Max Greenfield admitted he was jealous and hopes to guest star on the show if it gets a full series order.
