James Gunn Responds to Fan Outrage Over Hal Jordan's Fate in Lanterns
DC Studios boss James Gunn has directly addressed the major fan controversy surrounding the first episode of "Lanterns." According to /Film, the series kills off Green Lantern legend Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, in its premiere, a move that has sparked significant backlash online.
Gunn responded to a fan complaint on Threads, per the outlet. The fan argued that killing Hal after a long wait for his live-action return was disrespectful. Gunn countered that Hal is the star of the show and appears in every episode, giving the character more screen time than in all previous live-action portrayals combined.
He praised Chandler's performance and expressed love for the character, "despite his imperfections." Gunn also hinted the death may not be final, adding the caveat "if that's exactly what that is" when referring to Jordan's demise.
The report notes that this decision firmly shifts the focus to Aaron Pierre's John Stewart, who is already slated to appear in Gunn's upcoming "Superman" film. Gunn offered no apology for the creative choice, fully standing by the bold narrative direction taken by the series.
