James Gunn shoots back at fan questioning demand for Clayface movie
DC Studios co-head James Gunn has responded to a fan questioning the need for a Clayface film. Per TheWrap, Gunn pushed back on a Threads user who asked, "who the f-k asked for a Clayface movie."
Gunn fired back with a list of classic films, asking who specifically asked for "Back to the Future," "Casablanca," "Pan's Labyrinth," or "The Matrix" before they were made. He argued that Hollywood isn't a place where movies are made based on public votes for familiar intellectual property.
The DC boss explained that sometimes filmmakers are inspired by lesser-known characters. He cited Mike Flanagan, James Watkins, and Hossein Amini as being inspired by the Batman villain and crafting what Gunn believes is a "very special story." Gunn said he prefers that inspiration over a writer churning out a passionless script for a popular character just to make money.
This isn't the first time Gunn has taken to social media for damage control. TheWrap notes he recently had to clarify a post from actor Frank Grillo that fans interpreted as confirming Adria Arjona's casting as Wonder Woman. Gunn stated Grillo had no knowledge of Arjona's role.
The Clayface movie is set to star Tom Rhys Harries as the titular villain. It's scheduled to hit theaters on October 23.
