Jewish Groups Call Out Mark Ruffalo for Antisemitic Rhetoric
Two major Jewish advocacy organizations have publicly criticized actor Mark Ruffalo for what they call antisemitic messaging, according to a report from Variety.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center and Creative Community for Peace issued statements condemning the actor's recent social media activity. The center's CEO, Jim Berk, said there is a need to draw a line when debate shifts into antisemitic territory.
The groups acted after Paramount condemned a post by Ruffalo. The actor shared an old video clip of Jewish Paramount Skydance board member Safra Catz, suggesting it showed her celebrating a genocide enabled by her former company, Oracle. Ruffalo has been a vocal critic of Paramount Skydance's deal to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery.
In his posts, Ruffalo accused Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, who is funding part of the deal, of being an oligarch crushing workers. After Paramount called his rhetoric antisemitic, Ruffalo responded that the accusation was dishonest.
The advocacy groups disagreed with Ruffalo's defense. Creative Community for Peace stated his rhetoric has moved beyond criticizing Israel into dangerous antisemitic tropes, and that intent does not erase the impact of such words.
