Joey King Details Conversation With Evan Rachel Wood After 'Practical Magic 2' Recast
Joey King says she had a supportive chat with the actress she replaced in the upcoming witchy sequel. Per The Hollywood Reporter, King revealed she spoke with Evan Rachel Wood after taking over the role of Kylie Owens in 'Practical Magic 2'.
Wood previously stated she was "not asked to come back" for the sequel, a decision she said was not her own. At the film's L.A. premiere, King told THR she had a "lovely conversation" with Wood and was "so appreciative of the support" she showed to King and the cast.
King praised Wood's original performance, saying she "made this role so special" as a young girl. Director Susanne Bier explained the recasting to THR, noting the characters are "literally out of college" in the story and that King and co-star Maisie Williams felt like the right fit for that age group.
JoBlo also reports that King addressed fan backlash over her casting directly on social media. She responded to a critical TikTok comment, explaining her love for the original film and asking the fan to keep an open mind. The user later deleted the comment and posted an apology, promising to buy two tickets.
Producer Denise Di Novi, who worked on both films, told THR the sequel came together due to fan demand reaching a "crescendo." She also confirmed that Aidan Quinn's character, Gary Hallet, died from the family curse and will not appear.
'Practical Magic 2', starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, hits theaters September 10.
