Jon Watts Tapped to Direct First Film in New Star Wars Trilogy
A new Star Wars trilogy is moving forward with a director familiar with massive franchises. According to reports from Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Watts has signed on to helm the first installment.
Per Collider, the new series of films will be written by Simon Kinberg, who was attached to the project in 2024. The story is expected to continue the narrative that concluded with 2019's "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker." Reports suggest Rey Skywalker, played by Daisy Ridley, is likely to appear.
Watts previously directed the three Tom Holland-led Spider-Man films for Marvel and Sony. He also has experience in the galaxy far, far away, having worked on the Disney+ series "Skeleton Crew."
As reported by MovieWeb, this project is considered to be the in-development Episode X. Beyond the writer and director, no further story details or a production timeline have been revealed.
TheWrap confirms Watts will direct from a script by Kinberg, cementing the key creative team for this next chapter.
