Lanterns co-creator reveals scrapped Green Lantern Corps scene and grounded approach

Per TVLine, Lanterns co-creator Chris Mundy told Entertainment Weekly the writers almost staged a major Green Lantern Corps cameo. In the show's fifth episode, the team initially envisioned a scene where other Lanterns arrived to help Hal Jordan and John Stewart fight back a darkness encroaching on Rushville. Mundy said they decided against it because it would have pulled focus from the show's two main characters.

Mundy confirmed that other colored Lantern factions, like the Red Lanterns and Star Sapphires, were never in consideration for the first season. The show instead kept its narrative grounded on Earth, with characters like Ch'p and Mogo only being referenced by name. Mundy said the plan is to maintain that grounded, tactile tone moving forward.

Polygon's finale breakdown notes that the season ended with John Stewart holding all the cards, having blackmailed the Guardians of Oa to operate independently on Earth with Hal Jordan's ring and a yellow battery forged by Sinestro. The finale wrapped up without a big CGI spectacle, leaving several threads dangling.

According to Polygon, Hal Jordan's death and the deletion of his AI felt like a point of no return, but Sinestro claimed Hal could be brought back using the ring. The outlet also speculates that Sinestro's humiliation could be the catalyst for the formation of his feared Sinestro Corps in the wider DC Universe.

Mundy hasn't ruled out more alien adventures if the story warrants, telling TVLine the writers' room has talked about characters like Kilowog. Both John Stewart and Guy Gardner are set to appear next in James Gunn's upcoming Man of Tomorrow film.
