Lanterns' Halogram Demands Answers, Vault Reveals Dark Family Legacy
The latest episode of HBO's Lanterns brings John Stewart and the holographic backup of Hal Jordan closer to the truth, but only after a painful family history comes to light, per TVLine and Polygon.
John, desperate to open Hal's mysterious vault, must negotiate with the 'Halogram,' a 2006-era AI copy of Hal stored in his Green Lantern ring. The construct distrusts John and refuses to help unless he gets to speak with Kerry, Hal's ex-lover played by Kelly Macdonald, TVLine reports. After a tense reunion where Kerry is able to physically touch the hologram, the trio heads to Hal's storage unit.
Inside the alien vault, they find only a backpack of survival gear and one of the black portal spheres seen all season, Polygon details. The episode's opening flashback to 1975, however, gives the vault grim new meaning. A young Hal is given a key by his father, Martin Jordan, who frames it as a 'Jordan boys' legacy' of soldiers leaving a failsafe behind. Hal later reveals the painful truth: his father died by suicide months later, and the 'legacy' was actually the same pain and suicide passed down from Hal's grandfather, according to Polygon.
The Halogram agrees to open a portal with the sphere, and he and John travel to a desolate alien world. John recognizes it as the destroyed homeworld of the alien Antaan, whose memories of his people's genocide were forcibly shared with John earlier in the season, Polygon explains. The pair navigate a toxic lake where John hallucinates his abusive father before being saved by the Halogram.
The episode ends on a cliffhanger as they approach a lighthouse on the distant shore, with the central mystery of who killed Hal Jordan still unanswered heading into the finale.
