Live-action Gargoyles series officially dead at Disney+

The planned live-action take on Gargoyles has been officially scrapped at Disney+. According to JoBlo and a source speaking to Variety, the project is no longer in development.

Series creator Greg Weisman confirmed the news in an interview with Comics Online. He stated that the live-action project from producer James Wan's company Atomic Monster and writer Gary Dauberman is "dead." Per Weisman, "there are no current plans for live-action."

Polygon reports that this adaptation would have significantly altered the original show's premise. Instead of following a clan of creatures, the series would have centered on Goliath as the last of his kind, teaming up with a police detective to investigate his past.

The animated Gargoyles, which aired from 1994 to 1996, followed a group of stone creatures who protect modern-day New York City at night. Weisman told JoBlo he has continued to develop story ideas for the property, filling notebooks with potential plots.

While the live-action path is closed, Polygon notes that voice actor Brent Spiner recently hinted a new animated Gargoyles project could be in the works.
