Mahershala Ali Says Oscars Are Stashed Away, Didn't Bring Fulfillment

Mahershala Ali revealed he has hidden his two Academy Awards from view, telling an audience it was to avoid feeling too accomplished. The actor spoke at a London Film Festival event covered by The Hollywood Reporter.

Ali said the statuettes for 'Moonlight' and 'Green Book' are kept in a cabinet, explaining he needed to move them out of sight to refocus on his work. He described the wins as bringing a sense of accomplishment, which he distinguished from genuine fulfillment.

The actor discussed his upcoming film where he plays a Muslim contract killer in Houston, a role he connected to themes of justice and the unequal treatment of Black men. He said he aims to humanize characters who feel unseen.

Ali also addressed the backlash to 'Green Book,' noting the experience taught him about sudden praise and subsequent criticism. He said he stands by his work but acknowledged the controversy and vitriolic response had a real impact on him.
